Job description
Band 5 Paediatric Emergency Department Nurse

We are recruiting Band 5 Paediatric nurses to work within our Paediatric Emergency Department at West Middlesex Hospital Site. This role is based on the West Middlesex Hospital Site and is part of a dedicated Paediatric Emergency Department that provides a busy, challenging and rewarding environment.

Role Overview

You will be given a structured orientation and supported to develop as a Paediatric A&E nurse. We encourage participation in specific courses such as PILS, Trauma, Mentorship, APLS, A&E course, Stabilisation of the unwell child course, in‑house training days (venepuncture and cannulation) and regular simulation teaching from dedicated education doctors.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain high standards of patient care
  • Acquire competency in basic nursing skills for ED
  • Ensure the safety of patients in accordance with local and national safeguarding procedures
  • Be proactive in maintaining local and national Quality Indicators for ED
  • Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in notes
  • Assist in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with local policy
  • Participate in the monitoring of standards of care and other quality initiatives in a positive manner
  • Maintain awareness of and comply with Trust policies and protocols at all times
  • Work effectively within the MDT in order to achieve desired outcomes for patients and their families
  • Encourage and support student nurses on placement in ED
  • Accountable for actions at all times
  • Active in maintaining an harmonious working environment
  • Develop into the role of a triage nurse, utilising advanced skills of assessment, prioritisation, decision‑making, risk management and communication skills
  • Responsible for the security and maintenance of ED equipment; helping to ensure that all equipment is in safe working order in conjunction with the Lead Nurse
  • Actively involved in quality improvement projects in the department
  • Work within own scope of practice and recognise limitations
  • Respond to incidents and complaints as they arise, reporting to senior members of the team as appropriate
