Job description
Overview

This role is an ophthalmic technician/vision screener position at a major London teaching hospital. In term time, the role visits Lambeth primary schools to screen vision in reception-aged children. It also supports orthoptic tasks with vision, secondary screening clinics, and hess charts. In school holidays, the role tests vision, assesses intra-ocular pressure, visual fields, and conducts scans such as corneal tomography, OPTOS and OCT prior to ophthalmologist assessment. The post-holder helps ensure the smooth running of ophthalmology clinics and keeps clinics well stocked and tidy.

Responsibilities
  • Part of the Eye Care Team, testing vision and visual fields and using equipment such as auto-refractors and ophthalmic imaging devices.
  • Deliver a high-quality orthoptic-led vision screening service for all eligible reception-age children across Lambeth; carry out vision assessments in state and independent schools (unsupervised).
  • Record outcomes of vision screening tests according to the agreed protocol; refer children who do not meet the visual standard; carry out administrative duties related to vision screening including accurate record keeping.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team; demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills with children to gain accurate test results and explain requirements.
  • Support the provision of ophthalmic services at St Thomas’ Hospital and help maintain stock and clinic organization.
