Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Paediatric Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team. In this rewarding role, you will support the delivery of high-quality Occupational Therapy services for children with a wide range of developmental, physical, and sensory needs.

Working closely under the supervision of qualified Occupational Therapists, you will contribute to assessment, intervention, and ongoing care, helping children and their families to develop skills and confidence in self‑management.

As an integral member of the Paediatric OT team, you will carry out both general and specialist clinical tasks, delivering delegated aspects of therapy care plans and, when appropriate, working as an autonomous practitioner. Your work will span a variety of settings, including health centres, nurseries, specialist schools, and children’s homes, where you will provide hands‑on support to aid physical management and functional development.

You will also play a key role in facilitating individual and group therapy sessions, supporting care pathways, and assisting with administrative tasks such as specialist equipment provision.

Responsibilities

• Under OT supervision, visit homes, nurseries, and schools to review, adjust, and arrange appropriate postural management and moving and handling equipment.
• Provide clear instruction to carers on safe use of equipment such as seating, bathing, toileting and sleep systems.
• Plan and deliver individual and group therapeutic activity programmes within therapist‑led care frameworks.
• Support parents and carers across a range of multi‑agency settings.
• Implement, demonstrate, and review intervention programmes for school staff, parents, and volunteers, adapting activities and providing training as needed.
• Work independently to assess progress, modify programmes, and arrange equipment within agreed limits, reporting outcomes to the supervising therapist.
• Communicate routine, complex, and sensitive information with tact, using adapted strategies to overcome communication barriers.
• Collaborate with families, carers, and professionals, negotiating decisions around client care with support from senior clinicians.
• Share assessment findings and management plans with school staff, carers, families, and the wider interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications & Skills

• FDSc Health and Social Care (Associate Practitioner) or equivalent education.
• Literacy and numeracy skills.
• Knowledge and skills acquired through a combination of formal training, short courses, in‑house training, and experience to diploma level or equivalent.
• Clear, accurate recording and reporting skills.
• Ability to use MS Office applications, e‑mail, and SystmOne.
• Organisation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and use own initiative.
• Demonstrated flexible and positive approach to team working and ability to adapt to change within the working situation.
• Car owner/driver with access to a motor vehicle (role involves travel to sites not easily accessed by public transport).
• Demonstrated practical, analytical, and judgement skills in patient care relevant to the care group.
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
