Job description
Job Summary

Applications are invited for a 10 PA Substantive Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry based within the Dental & Maxillofacial department at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Part‑time and job‑share arrangements would be considered and encouraged. The Maxillofacial and Dental team provide maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic services, paediatric dentistry and restorative dentistry for children and teenagers. The department sees over 5,000 outpatient and around 300 inpatient appointments per annum, many of whom are under multiple clinical teams because of their complex medical needs. The unit benefits from a recently refurbished, purpose‑built suite with six clinical rooms. The department has three all‑day operating lists per week shared between the specialties.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical duties include outpatients and inpatient general anaesthesia treatment lists. Sessions will be dedicated to new patient/review clinics, treatment (with or without inhalation sedation) and theatre lists. The post holder will participate in clinical supervision, support and teaching the junior staff, therapists and hygienists.

  • Provide comprehensive paediatric dental care for appropriate patients, including treatment under local anaesthesia, inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia on an outpatient and inpatient basis.
  • Plan treatment within the multidisciplinary team, liaising with maxillofacial surgical and orthodontic colleagues.
  • Supervise visiting trainees.
  • Attain the necessary continuing dental education and professional development criteria.
  • Work closely with other members of the maxillofacial and dental team and other key professionals, especially medical, surgical and anaesthetic colleagues with a focus on craniofacial, EB, cardiac and oncology teams.
  • Assess and triage new patient referral letters.
  • Co‑ordinate and help expand piggyback dental treatment on other operating lists.
  • Handle clinical administration – letters and emails.
  • Liaise with other medical teams and departments to promote good oral health.
