Qualifications:
An experienced and highly skilled Senior Paediatric Audiologist, able to work autonomously to assess the hearing of children aged 8 months to 18 years of age.
About the Trust:
West London NHS Trust, in partnership with Central and North West London NHS Trust (CNWL), the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Trust and some other smaller providers, including third sector, have formed a partnership – Ealing Community Partners – to provide integrated community health services in Ealing. The Ealing Paediatric Audiology Service is an integral part of the Ealing Service for Children with Additional Needs which integrates different health, education and social services for children. There is a high level of integration and collaboration between different health, education and social care services.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to meeting the needs of children in the diverse community.
- Assist the Clinical Team Lead in the planning, development and delivery of the Paediatric Audiology Service for the paediatric population of Ealing (2nd tier).
- Play an integral role in ensuring high quality service delivery and improvements to achieve UKAS IQIPS accreditation.
- Provision of a range of comprehensive audiological services to a paediatric population including children with special needs.
- Effective and supportive communication with parents and professionals.
- Supervise the work of junior staff and support staff.
- Provide expert knowledge and communication in all aspects of paediatric hearing assessment and onward referral.
- Take an active role in clinical audit, research and clinical governance for the audiology service, including designing and completing audits within own fields, participating in data collection for larger projects and contributing to the development of evidence‑based protocols.
- Assist in gathering departmental performance data, clinical pathways and efficient working of patient management systems.
- Be responsible for efficient transition of patients from paediatric to adult services.
- Maintain up‑to‑date advanced level of theoretical knowledge and therapeutic evidence‑based practice regarding specialist area.
- Provide specialist opinion and advice for audiologists and other professionals as required.
- Provide reports and communication of an excellent standard for users, families and associated professionals, adapting the contents to the communication styles and diversity of the recipients.
- Overcome barriers to understanding or motivation, including English as a second language and/or learning or language disability or mental health difficulties in the parents/carers, to facilitate effective treatment.
- Develop proactive, collaborative partnerships with medical and education professionals and other relevant agencies to meet the needs of the client and family (this may also involve Child Protection or safeguarding cases).
- Work in conjunction with the Clinical Team Lead, ensuring appropriate governance and awareness is in place amongst junior staff.
- Ensure that training is given on the emergence of new clinical practice.
- Lead in ensuring quality assurance of test results.
- Execute any other duties commensurate with the grade.
- Perform specialist diagnostic audiological procedures and provide a comprehensive, suitable, individual management plan for children and babies.
- Be proficient in objective and behavioural audiological procedures, including visual reinforcement audiometry, play audiometry, pure tone audiology, speech testing, and diagnostic otoacoustic emissions.
- Serve as a clinical representative at audiology meetings and other internal and external trust meetings, including an active member of the CHSWG in absence of team leaders.
- Use effective verbal and non‑verbal communication skills during encounters with patients and carers where, in addition to hearing loss, there are other barriers such as physical disabilities, developmental problems or language/cultural differences.
- Be responsible for calibration, maintenance and safety of all audiology equipment and for procurement of new equipment and supplies for the department.
- Be responsible for the referral process onwards from the department to other agencies (Tier 3 audiology services, GPs, ENT, paediatricians, etc.).
- Supervise junior members of staff; support them in training and development.
- Provide governance and facilitate the obtaining of informed consent on younger patients in an appropriate manner.
- Assist in capturing and monitoring patient feedback and disseminating the information to the wider team.
- Assist in developing and maintaining department protocols and guidelines for diagnostic testing in line with national protocols and best practice as part of an evidence‑based approach.
- Support the Team Lead and Clinical Service Manager in achieving IQIPS accreditation.
- Participate in audit programmes and the ongoing development of new techniques and technology within the department.
- Ensure that a family‑friendly approach permeates all contact between audiology services and deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.
- Assist in promoting the service, providing refresher training, talks and demonstrations to other members of the health service such as Deaf Awareness and local health fairs.
- Deal with all equipment faults, including arranging repair in line with departmental and manufacturer guidelines.
- Assist in maintaining stock levels, records and stock taking.
- Help ensure resources are available to warrant the smooth running of the clinics, including scheduling of appointments, arranging availability of appropriate accommodation and/or equipment.
- Deputise for the Team Lead as and when required.
- Support the Team Lead in recruitment and staff management.
- Assist in developing a risk‑averse approach and risk assessment culture in all staff.
- Contribute to trust requirements for data collection and sharing of information (e.g. System One).
- Assist in supporting the school screening service when required.
- Contribute to the development and monitoring of an effective clinical governance programme, promoting best practice through participation.
- Support the Team Lead in practising and promoting cost‑effective and efficient service delivery.
- Assist and participate in income generation activities: promotion and delivery.
- Train junior members of staff in department protocols and procedures and be responsible for departmental inductions.
- Lead on clinical supervision and arrange training of staff (internal and external).
- Be responsible for own continuous professional development and registration.
- Participate in peer support and supervision routinely.
- Supervise, educate and assess the performance of students.
- Participate and/or lead on clinical service development and research in paediatric audiology.
- Organise and undertake various audits relevant to the service.
- Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as appropriate to banding level, as delegated by the Team Lead.
- Present a professional persona at all times, demonstrating appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies that reflect positively on the organisation.
- Maintain professional registration, and a commitment to own continuing professional development, and also to actively engage in own supervision and appraisal.
- Contribute and deliver on Service Business Continuity Plans and ensure emergency planning and winter planning requirements are met within the service.
- Required to work at any of the Trust’s sites in line with service needs.
- All staff must participate in the Trust’s Performance Appraisal Scheme and contribute to their own development and that of staff they are responsible for appraising.
