The Organisation

We are seeking to appoint an additional Non-Executive Director (NED) to join the Board of Hertfordshire Catering Limited (HCL) — a dynamic, values-led organisation delivering high-quality catering services to the education sector.

About HCL

Hertfordshire Catering Limited is one of the UK's largest specialist providers of school and education catering services. Wholly owned by Hertfordshire County Council, HCL is a commercially-run business with a strong social purpose. We serve over 450 schools across Hertfordshire, London, and surrounding areas, with an annual turnover of approximately £45 million.

Our vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people through nutritious, affordable, and enjoyable meals. We operate at the heart of local communities and reinvest our profits to generate long-term social value. With strong foundations in place, we are now ambitious to grow our services and expand our reach across the region and beyond.

The Role

As a Non-Executive Director, you will provide strategic oversight, independent judgment, and constructive challenge to support the continued success of the business. You will work closely with the Executive team and Board colleagues to shape the strategic direction of the company, ensure effective governance, and champion innovation and inclusion.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise in any of the following areas:

  • Hospitality and food service operations
  • Consumer-facing businesses and customer experience
  • Digital transformation and IT strategy
  • Finance, risk management, and audit
  • HR, workforce development, or organisational culture
  • Public sector and education leadership

We are also keen to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

This is a voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed, and requires a time commitment of around one day per month, including attendance at Board and committee meetings, typically held in Welwyn Garden City.
