Job summary

A leading biscuit manufacturing company in the UK seeks an experienced engineer to provide effective maintenance support. You will perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on a variety of production equipment. Required qualifications include an NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and experience in a fast-paced environment. What does your typical day look like?

To deliver effective and efficient engineering support to production operations by maintaining, repairing, and enhancing plant and equipment to ensure optimum performance and minimal downtime. This role operates within a fast-paced biscuit manufacturing environment and demands a proactive approach to both planned and reactive maintenance, with a strong emphasis on safety, hygiene, and product quality.

Shift Pattern - 4 on, 4 off, which involves weekends. 7am - 7pm.

What are the key ingredients needed for the role?
  • Carry out planned maintenance activities as scheduled by the maintenance plan contained within the CMMS
  • Attend and repair breakdowns as required, and report all actions carried out and any further actions required, via the CMMS
  • Conduct mechanical and electrical fault finding and repairs across a wide range of food production equipment (e.g. ovens, conveyors, mixers, multi-head weighers, baggers)
  • Provide support to production teams during changeovers and start-ups to minimize delays
  • Report in a comprehensive manner via the CMMS, all work activities carried out on a daily/shift basis
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and performance
  • Support engineering-led improvement projects, including installations, upgrades, and modifications
  • Ensure work areas are clean, safe, and organized, in line with 5S principles
  • Complete all work safely and in compliance with site Health & Safety and food hygiene regulations
  • Proactively identify and report any health & safety risks, unsafe practices, or equipment faults

Main Ingredients for the Role:
  • Time-served multi-skilled apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
  • Demonstrable experience in a fast-paced manufacturing setting, ideally within the food or FMCG industry
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills across both mechanical and electrical systems
  • Practical understanding of PLC systems (e.g. for fault finding, programming experience not essential)
  • Solid knowledge of health & safety, food safety, and hygiene requirements
  • Willingness to work shifts and support overtime as needed
Advantageous for the role:
  • Previous experience in a food manufacturing or bakery environment
  • IOSH Working Safely certification or an equivalent H&S qualification
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies (e.g. root cause analysis, 5S etc)
  • Awareness of utilities maintenance (e.g. steam systems, compressed air, refrigeration)
