Job Summary
An exciting new vacancy has arisen for a Medical Engineering Technician within the Medical Electronics Department. The Medical Electronics Department will manage the maintenance and repair of all medical equipment across WWL’s services, requiring a proactive, enthusiastic approach to introduce best‑practice solutions from the outset. The successful applicant will work with minimal supervision and may travel across the Wigan & Leigh area in a works vehicle. A full, current UK driving licence is required. The role is permanent, 37.5 hours per week, and may occasionally involve work outside normal clinic hours.
Key Qualifications
- HNC/HND in electronic or electrical repair and maintenance, or equivalent relevant experience in an electronic/electrical environment.
- Experience in the maintenance and performance checking of electrical/electronic equipment.
- Practical experience of using a range of test and measuring equipment and of applying electronics engineering workshop practice and techniques.
- Knowledge of cleaning / decontamination procedures and safe operation techniques used within a maintenance environment.
- Full driving licence (reasonable adjustments may be considered where disability precludes this).
- Good communicator with excellent dexterity and attention to detail.
- Geographic familiarity with the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh area.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Windows operating systems and applications, and able to work with databases.
- Speak English to an appropriate professional standard, with confidence and accuracy.
- Fully conversant with electrical safety testing techniques.
- Desirable: ECDL European Computer Driving Licence; previous employment in a healthcare maintenance environment.
- Strong interest in training initiatives and change management.
- Desirable: Ability to work with other professions and manage tasks independently.
- Desirable: Experience in healthcare or high‑risk device maintenance (e.g., Defibs, infusion devices, ICPs, ventilators).
Responsibilities
- Collect and deliver medical equipment prior to and post decontamination, storage and servicing across WWL sites.
- Conduct acceptance testing for new devices, including sleep service equipment, in accordance with medical electronics acceptance protocols.
- Use the department’s vehicle when appropriate, communicating technical information to technical/non‑technical staff.
- Disassemble and reassemble medical equipment for decontamination and repair, using precision tools and specialised test equipment.
- Clean and decontaminate medical equipment prior to service, repair, and storage, ensuring safety and preventing cross‑infection.
- Service and repair a range of medical equipment within the Trust, diagnosing faults on complex equipment using test equipment and dedicated software.
- Carry out electrical safety testing on serviced and repaired complex equipment to ensure results are within the stated limits.
- Maintain statutory and general records related to the department’s work, including equipment history, maintenance, test results, technical updates, upgrades, modifications, and stock control.
- Use Oracle to liaise with contractors and external companies regarding ordering, invoicing, and related tasks.
