About the role
A gardener/maintenance person’s day-to-day tasks can be extremely varied. One day you may be helping to build furniture, and another day carrying out routine checks around the home.
Main Duties and Responsibilities as a gardener
- To care for, manage and develop identified garden areas
- To develop and maintain garden beds/borders
- To use the correct garden machinery/equipment in order to carry out a variety of garden maintenance (mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, pesticide spraying) adhering to Health and Safety including wearing the correct PPE.
- To use the correct hand tools for a variety of garden maintenance (digging, planting, weeding and pruning)
- To have knowledge and understanding of the way in which to care for manage and develop identified garden areas, including soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed presentation and planting
- To ensure the grounds are showcased for all special events e.g. Summer Fayre
Some of the daily tasks that a maintenance person would carry out would be:
- Preventative maintenance and general building repair such as repairing broken locks, doors, and other loose fittings.
- Carrying out routine checks on equipment and services such as fire alarms, extinguishers, fire doors, and carrying out any tasks in the home’s maintenance books
- Minor plumbing and carpentry
- Painting and decorating
- Keeping the exterior of the homes clean, tidy, and free from trip hazards.
- Changing light bulbs and keeping stock of items such as bulbs, batteries, and other equipment.
- Before a weekend/bank holiday, checking that lights, equipment, heating, and items such as batteries, are all working.
- Providing meter readings for utilities and any boilers.
To be successful in the role of gardener/maintenance, our ideal candidate would:
- Have good all-round maintenance skills such as joinery, plumbing and painting.
- Have experience within a similar environment/role.
- Show a good understanding of Health & Safety regulations and compliance.
- Be physically fit and able to lift lighter items of furniture/objects safely.
- Be able to maintain and use handheld tools safely (following any appropriate training)
- Be willing to attend any training that will develop their skills and would be relevant to their role.
- Hold a full driver’s license.

Application process
Successful applicants would require two written references, a standard/enhanced DBS (depending on role) and evidence of a right to work in the UK check.
