Our diverse teams of over 3,000 professionals provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for the environment and economy. APHA values diversity and inclusion and aims to attract applications from all backgrounds and underrepresented groups. The Science Directorate (SD) delivers high quality, high impact multidisciplinary science and is responsible for identifying, managing and controlling incidents and outbreaks of endemic and exotic diseases and pests in animals, plants and bees, as well as carrying out research. We provide an evidence base for the UK Government and international reference centre responsibilities.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated leader and epidemiologist to join the Department of Epidemiological Sciences. The successful applicant will lead and generate evidence to tackle pressing animal health problems in GB livestock, with a primary focus on bovine tuberculosis. You will be a lead analytical epidemiologist in the Epidemiology workgroup, providing high quality epidemiological consultancy and project leadership, and contributing to capability building across the team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and co-ordinate epidemiology research projects and provide advice within the epidemiology workgroup.
  • Promote APHA science and epidemiology at national and international meetings and conferences by presenting and publishing in reports and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Provide national and international consultancy, collaborating within APHA and with external partners at meetings and conferences.
  • Support the Epidemiology workgroup leader as required in management and capability building activities.
  • Apply expertise to current national and international policymaking and disease control issues, undertaking epidemiological analysis of high complexity.
  • Represent Epidemiology and APHA in strategic TB working groups, programme boards and stakeholder groups as required.
  • Build and maintain a specialist profile in analytical epidemiology, including writing and presenting material in national and international journals and meetings.
  • Be a key member of the DES science leadership team and deputise for the workgroup leader and G6 leaders as required.
  • Build and maintain key relationships within APHA and with external partners to ensure appropriate application of analytical epidemiology.
  • Lead epidemiology projects from design to delivery, including task prioritisation, progress reviews, budget and resource management, and collaboration with experts as needed.
  • Support other epidemiologists with analytical epidemiology discipline expertise and policy awareness, including peer-review of outputs to ensure scientific integrity.
