Job description

Junior Sister/Charge Nurse Paediatric ED

The closing date is 08 December 2025

The post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients, supporting and guiding junior staff. They will provide direct patient care and possess detailed clinical knowledge of the specialist area. The post holder will assist senior Sister/Charge Nurses in ensuring high standards of care are delivered and maintained. They will act as a positive role model within the department for staff, patients and carers and deputise for the senior sister as required.

Key relationships include patients and families (adult & child), the Modern Matron, senior and junior nurses, education leads, consultant and junior medical staff, support and ancillary staff (including nursing students) and community teams. All members of the multi‑disciplinary team are involved to provide a coordinated service.

Main duties of the job

• Deliver clinical expertise in all aspects of care, acting as a visible practitioner.
• Collaborate with health‑care professionals to provide high‑standard effective care within best‑practice guidelines.
• Act as a resource of specialised knowledge to ensure care for ill children and families is appropriate and optimised.
• Demonstrate awareness of legislation (child protection, vulnerable adults, mental health) and act appropriately.
• Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
• Promote shared objectives of the multidisciplinary team and use Clinical Benchmarking and Improving Quality Programme processes.
• Interface between hospital and community to provide a seamless service.
• Develop good working relationships with departments to ensure an effective journey.
• Encourage an evidence‑based culture through pathways and protocols.
