Job description

"The Royal Marsden Hospital is Europe's largest Oncology centre with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Diagnostic Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust and includes CT, MRI, Mammography, Ultrasound as well as a general and IR service in Chelsea.

The imaging department works within a robust quality management system aligned to QSI standards and has been awarded QSI quality mark in 2025.

We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic individuals to cover a 0.6WTE band 8A IR/ X-ray Superintendent Radiographer across our Chelsea and Sutton sites - supporting and managing the Sutton general X-ray and development of the new IR service in Sutton plus supporting the service and cover in IR/ X-ray Chelsea along side the Chelsea IR/ x-ray Superintendent . The person will be working across the 2 sites where required .

The applicant must have significant post graduation oncological IR, x-ray and cross sectional and x-ray experience .The post holder will be responsible for the operational management and training of the radiology staff within the IR and Xray service in Sutton, but working closely with the together with the Chelsea x-ray / IR lead, which includes a shared IR on call service with Chelsea and Westminster Trust and the Royal Brompton Foundation Trust .

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the operational management of staff and will support and lead in the delivery of the General Radiology and IR service across both sites . He/she will interact with Diagnostic Imaging department Superintendents to ensure delivery of appropriate and reactive Diagnostic Imaging Services as a whole. The post holder will assist with organisation of all staff rotation and will have an awareness of budgetary requirements. In addition the post holder should have current experience of cross-sectional imaging to provide cover for other Superintendent Radiographers.

This post is hands on as well as administrative and will demand patient contact as well as supervisory skills. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, distressed, disorientated, and those with physical and mental disabilities.

The candidate must also demonstrate a commitment to professional development and show a keen interest in the future of their profession. They will be expected to support both the service and its staff in continuing to maintain and develop the highest standards of imaging.

Job responsibilities

To provide the clinical lead for all IR and general radiography examinations on site.

To perform clinical IR and radiography examinations to the agreed department standard as appropriate.

To be responsible for prioritising examinations based on clinical urgency.

To solve problems which are beyond the capabilities or expertise of the senior radiographers within the department

To co-ordinate with clinical units regarding research protocols to provide agreed protocols for Imaging.

  • Significant recent post graduate experience in IR, X-Ray and CT
