Job summary

SSE is seeking an HVDC Project Engineer to join the HVDC Engineering team within SSEN Transmission. Based from one of our Scottish locations (Glasgow, Aberdeen or Inverness), you will support major HVDC infrastructure projects central to the UK's energy transition.

You will coordinate design assurance, review contractor deliverables, and collaborate with technical authorities. The role includes FAT participation, safety emphasis, and risk management across the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

• A degree, HND or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering discipline, ideally electrical or mechanical engineering.
• Experience in project engineering, ideally within HVDC, power transmission, energy infrastructure or other complex engineering environments.
• Knowledge of electrical plant, substations, HVDC systems or related technologies, or transferable experience from a similar sector.
• Strong technical, analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the confidence to address challenges and support effective decision‑making.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate design assurance activities and support the delivery of project governance and stage-gate documentation.
• Review contractor deliverables for main plant equipment and auxiliary systems, ensuring compliance with technical and quality requirements as part of the equipment approval process.
• Collaborate with technical authorities and engineering specialists to facilitate effective review and approval of engineering deliverables.
• Attend factory acceptance testing (FAT) and support commissioning activities to ensure equipment performs as intended.
• Promote a positive safety culture and support the management of engineering, quality and project risks throughout the project lifecycle.
