Job description

We’re looking for a dedicated Floating Support Worker to join our Housing First Team on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in developing and strengthening the Housing First approach across Newport, helping us make a real difference in people’s lives.

It is essential that the successful candidate has a driver's license and access to a vehicle.

What is great about the role?

Housing First is a unique and internationally evidenced approach to supporting the most excluded, long-term, entrenched and cyclically homeless individuals and those living rough on the streets.

It focuses on finding permanent housing as quickly as possible and then addressing the issues that have contributed to an individual’s homelessness.

How can I make a difference?

This is a varied, fast paced role where you will have the chance to work with people rough sleeping or who are persistently vulnerably housed, experiencing complex and multiple experiences of trauma in their lives using the Housing First model.

Your role will be to engage with the people we support and establish trust, respect and a rapport.

You will be supported by a committed team, collaborating with colleagues and the POBL group to ensure the ongoing success of this project.

Day to Day Tasks
  • Supporting the Housing First Co-ordinators to support individuals with highly complex needs from rough sleeping into their own accommodation.
  • Engage and interact positively with the people we support to establish goals to work towards.
  • Support customers to make an informed choice relating to the sourcing of appropriate accommodation.
  • Conduct all work within the Welsh Government’s Housing First Principles.
  • Visit customers to conduct a welfare check, offer support, information and advice with open and honest conversations.
  • Work with external agencies and signpost the people we support to the appropriate services suited to their needs.
  • Maintain awareness of safe working practices, such as the Lone working & safeguarding policy.

Our aim is to ensure we equip the people we support with the knowledge and tools they need to help them manage their homes independently.

This is a challenging role and you may face complex situations and difficult conversations, behaviours and needs.

These individuals will have a variety of support needs including but not limited to:

  • Substance Misuse
  • Mental health
  • Physical health
  • Entrenched and extended periods of rough sleeping
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • Complex trauma

Therefore, you will need to be resilient to cope with the ever-changing circumstances and the emotional needs of people.

Pobl benefits
  • Full-time, permanent employment
  • Competitive salary of £24,531.00
  • Work pattern: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (with occasional weekend work possible)
  • 26 days holiday, rising to 27 days after 1 year of service (or cash equivalent of 1 day’s annual leave)
  • Pension scheme
  • Sick Pay
  • Bespoke learning pathway with support from an experienced Learning and Development team
  • Internal progression opportunities
  • Wellbeing and psychological support
  • Time for Talk service
  • 45p per mile reimbursement
