Job description

Mechanical Maintenance Operative

Salary: £38,000

Mitie Care & Custody (C&C) is dedicated to creating a restorative environment for prisoners, grounded in integrity and high standards. The role is part of the engineering team at HMP Millsike.

Job objectives and responsibilities
  • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on plant and systems.
  • Ensure SHE standards are maintained and liaise with engineers and subcontractors.
  • Provide proactive client liaison, reporting concerns and relaying them to management.
  • Comply with existing business risk management procedures for maintenance and project works.
  • Maintain all work‑related documentation accurately and promptly.
  • Investigate and report infrastructure shortfalls, problems and incidents, recommending remedial actions.
  • Coordinate connections to existing plant/systems and use O&M manuals and quality procedures.
  • Be available for scheduled and unplanned weekend working; operate 24/7 with a shift rota and out‑of‑hours call‑out functions.
  • Adhere to company and statutory regulations on safe systems of work, health & safety, hygiene, cleanliness and localised fire regulation procedures.
Person specification
  • Certification: Apprenticeship, IOSH, C&G/BTEC Mechanical & Electrical Building Services Engineering (Parts 1–3), NVQ Level 3, C&G 2079 F Gas, HVAC or gas, or C&G 2391/2 18th edition IEE regulations.
  • Previous experience in electrical maintenance services in a large, complex environment.
  • Basic to intermediate IT skills – Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook – and experience updating records.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including note‑taking.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and self‑motivation.
  • Comprehensive practical knowledge of building services disciplines: heating, hot water, ventilating, refrigeration, environmental, electrical power & distribution, and public health.
  • Team‑working ability, flexibility, proactive nature and a “can‑do” attitude.

What we are looking for
  • UK citizen or Commonwealth citizen with indefinite leave to remain, or EEA citizen.
  • Valid passport with no restrictions on stay in the UK.
  • Passport evidence of right to work in the UK; biometric card and current passport required.
  • Continued residence in the UK for the past 3 years (no overseas trips >3 months).
  • No more than 3 months at any one time overseas in the previous 5 years.
  • Exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act; ready for Enhanced DBS, Counter‑Terrorist Checked vetting and 5‑year employer reference.
