Job Title: Specialist Inspector
Location: United Kingdom
Salary: £71,171 – £75,323 + Civil Service Pension (employer contribution of 28.97%)

This is a specialist role for those looking to apply expertise in Electrical, Control and Cyber Security (ECCS) across high-hazard industries. The position offers the opportunity to develop both legal and technical skills while contributing to the protection of people, assets and the wider public.

The role focuses on ensuring that major accident hazards relating to ECCS are effectively managed across a variety of onshore high-hazard installations, including oil refineries, gas storage, chemical production, and some nuclear sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect high-hazard industrial sites to ensure ECCS risks are being suitably managed and operators are compliant with legislation.

• Conduct technical assessments of safety reports for both new and existing installations.

• Investigate accidents and incidents involving industrial control systems to identify causes and prevent recurrence.

• Produce detailed inspection reports, identifying compliance gaps and failures.

• Take enforcement action where significant risks are identified (e.g., prohibiting unsafe processes).

• Provide expert opinion in legal proceedings, tribunals, and inquests when required.

• Advise colleagues and stakeholders on technical issues such as electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres and cyber security standards.

• Engage with government departments, industry, and professional bodies to share intelligence, shape guidance, and promote improvements in standards.

• Represent the organisation nationally at industry forums and conferences.

Specialist Training Programme (STP)

All successful candidates will complete a two-year structured training programme, which provides in-depth legal training and, where necessary, further technical training. For cyber security, full development support is offered to assess against operational guidance and relevant standards such as IEC 62443.

During this time, inspectors are expected to work full-time and travel across the UK, including overnight stays.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Background in a technical engineering role.

• Ability to communicate and influence effectively at all levels, including senior management.

• Proven experience producing clear, detailed technical reports and presenting complex information, including for non-technical audiences.

• Strategic thinking and strong decision-making skills.

• Experience in major hazard / high consequence / COMAH environments.

Qualifications & Memberships

• A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronic or Control Engineering.

• Chartered status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or the ability to achieve chartered status.

• Full UK driving licence (reasonable adjustments considered for disabilities).

Technical Expertise

• Proven experience in the design, commissioning, operation and maintenance of process control and safety instrumented systems (SIS) in relevant industries such as petrochemicals.

• Practical knowledge of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres (Ex).

• Strong understanding of relevant good practice (RGP) and industry standards such as BS EN 61511 and BS EN 60079.
