Job Purpose

The Higher‑Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) supports the teaching and learning of pupils across the school, working under the guidance of teachers to plan, deliver, and assess learning activities. The HLTA may take responsibility for leading lessons, covering classes, and supporting individuals or small groups to raise attainment and ensure positive pupil progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities in line with the school curriculum.
  • Lead whole‑class learning under the direction and supervision of a qualified teacher, providing effective classroom management and engagement.
  • Adapt teaching strategies and materials to meet the needs of pupils with varying abilities and additional needs.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupil progress in line with school policies.
  • Provide feedback to pupils to support their learning and personal development.
  • Supervise pupils in a range of settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, and during educational visits.
