Healthcare Assistant

Two positions have arisen within the Community Dermatology Team in Sunderland, based at Bunny Hill Primary Care Centre for a friendly and enthusiastic Band 3 Health Care Assistant. The team delivers local, accessible, high-quality dermatology and minor surgery services in a community care setting.

The service offers a one‑stop principle for patients presenting with skin lesions, where they will have assessments, diagnosis and, where appropriate, surgical procedures taking place by one of our team of doctors or specialist nurses.

We are recruiting two part‑time posts of 20 and 24 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

As a Dermatology Health Care Assistant, the post holder will be part of a team delivering high quality, nurse‑led services to patients requiring a range of treatments for skin, nail and hair conditions, whilst also providing education and support to those suffering from chronic skin conditions.

As a Health Care Assistant, the post holder will be expected to undertake a range of clinical tasks, such as phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood pressure recording, assisting in minor surgery, wound care and suture removal, once competence is assured.

The Community Dermatology Team are a busy nurse‑led service and there would be an expectation that the successful candidate will work a variety of shifts across a Monday to Friday working week, to meet the needs of the service.

Job responsibilities

  • To assist medical and nursing staff in the provision of skilled nursing care for patients attending the Community Dermatology and Minor Surgery Care Service, including decanting of liquid nitrogen.
  • To undertake clinical tasks, such as phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood pressure recording, wound care, suture removal, skin scrapings, nail clippings and swabs for microbiology.
  • To assist in minor surgery, adhering to policies and procedures, such as infection control and aseptic technique.
  • To support and educate patients, and their carers, in implementing individual programmes of planned care to encourage self‑management of chronic skin conditions, following agreed treatment plans.
  • To record accurate patient information/consultations onto the electronic patient record.
  • To monitor stock levels, ensuring effective stock rotation and responsible for ordering stock as appropriate, liaising with the procurement team.
  • To maintain agreed standards of care, integrity and dignity of all patients.
  • To develop his/her scope of professional practice in order to support the team to meet service requirements in accordance with evidence‑based guidelines.
  • On occasion there may be a requirement to support administration colleagues with telephone calls and reception duties.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 2 in a health related subject.
  • Completion of Care Standards or working towards.
  • Good standard of general education.
  • NVQ level 3.
Experience
  • Experience of working in the NHS or healthcare environment.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with a wide range of staff.
  • Experience of recording information in a clinical IT system.
  • Previous experience of working in an outpatients clinic/treatment room or dermatology department.
Physical Skills
  • Ability to move and handle safely without causing harm to themselves or others.
  • Trained in moving and handling procedures.
Skills and Knowledge
