Job description

We are looking to appoint an HCPC registered Clinical or Forensic Psychologist to join the Essex Community Offending behaviour Service (ECOS). We are a welcoming multi‑disciplinary team, providing a service of excellence for service users across Essex.

Key Duties
  • Complete specialist psychological assessment and risk assessment of service users.
  • Treat service users referred to the service, delivering evidence‑based psychological interventions across all care settings.
  • Provide highly specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals, contributing directly to formulation, treatment and risk management plans.
  • Deliver clinical supervision to Assistant Psychologists working in the service.
  • Support psycho‑logical aspects of service development, evaluation, research, and teaching.
  • Maintain standards in supervision and CPD, and manage workloads of assistants and practitioner psychologists in training.
  • Travel regularly as part of the role.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist psychological assessments (including risk assessments) using complex data from tests, self‑report measures, rating scales, structured observations and semi‑structured interviews.
  • Formulate and implement plans for formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s difficulties, using evidence‑based methods across the full range of care settings.
  • Implement a range of specialist psychological interventions for individuals, adjusting and refining formulations drawing upon different explanatory models.
  • Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models and complex historical/developmental factors.
  • Give specialist advice and consultation to other professionals, directly and indirectly contributing to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care.
  • Conduct complex risk assessment and risk management, advising other professions on psychological aspects of risk.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex technical and clinically sensitive information to clients and professional colleagues.
Teaching, Training and Supervision
  • Receive regular clinical and professional supervision from a senior psychologist and other senior professional colleagues.
  • Develop skills in postgraduate teaching, training and supervision; provide supervision for other professional staff’s psychological work.
  • Provide clinical placements for trainee clinical psychologists, ensuring they learn required skills, competencies and experience.
  • Contribute to pre‑ and post‑qualification teaching of professional psychology.
  • Advise, consult and train staff working with the client group across a range of agencies and settings.
  • Consult on team dynamics and the impact of working with personality disorder, strengthening the team’s risk management.
Management, Recruitment, Policy and Service Development
  • Support psychological aspects of service development, evaluation and monitoring of the team’s operational policies and services.
  • Advise relevant health services and professional management on psychological or organisational matters.
  • Manage workloads of assistants and practitioner psychologists in training within the framework of team/service policies and procedures.
  • Participate in short‑listing and interviewing of assistant/graduate psychologists where required.
  • Engage in multi‑disciplinary forums related to service delivery (clinical reviews, referral meetings, etc.).
Information Resources
  • Maintain personal record keeping, processing, storage of data and transcribing minutes where appropriate.
  • Ensure all databases related to the service area are maintained satisfactorily.
Research and Service Evaluation
  • Apply doctoral‑level knowledge of research methodology, design and complex multivariate data analysis.
  • Utilise theory, evidence‑based literature and research to support evidence‑based practice in individual work, team work and relevant service areas.
  • Contribute to appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.
  • Carry out project management with support from senior colleagues, including complex audit and service evaluation.
General
  • Maintain the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in CPD training and development programmes.
  • Develop and articulate best practice in psychology across the service by continuing professional growth and engagement with current developments.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping, electronic data entry, report writing and professional self‑governance.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with legislation, national and local policies concerning the specific client group and mental health.
