Job description

Our Future Health is building the UK's largest health research programme, transforming the way we prevent, detect and treat disease. We are searching for a Financial Controller to join on a six-month FTC who will play an integral role within Our Future Health taking the lead responsibility for the management of core financial operations, financial reporting and financial control.

With a March year‑end, it is an exciting time to join the organisation as the six‑month contract will span budget development, preparation of the year‑end accounts, audit, end‑of‑year grant claims, updating of coding structures where required for the new financial year, and supporting the set‑up of future funding agreements.

Despite big improvements in healthcare in our lifetimes, today millions of people in the UK still live in poor health as they get older. Diseases like cancer, dementia, diabetes, and heart disease affect the lives of many people in our communities. Our goal is to create a world‑leading resource for health research, to improve our understanding and spot the patterns of how and why common diseases start, so treatments can begin sooner and be more effective.

What you'll be doing:
  • Oversee all accounting operations, including AP, AR, bookkeeping, financial reporting, tax compliance and cash management.
  • Produce accurate monthly management accounts and deliver year‑end statutory accounts, managing the audit process.
  • Manage grant reporting, quarterly claims and associated audits for government and charitable funders.
  • Maintain strong internal controls by developing and documenting financial processes and policies.
  • Prepare short‑ and medium‑term cash forecasts and implement effective cash‑management policies.
  • Manage, develop and support the Assistant Accountant.
  • Oversee and performance‑manage the outsourced accounting provider.
  • Partner with senior leaders to develop dynamic income forecasts and ensure progress on income‑generation actions.
  • Build processes and controls for new business activities, including data‑access and recontact‑study revenue streams.
  • Work with finance colleagues to improve programme‑ and activity‑based forecasting and reporting.
  • Support the Finance Director with ad‑hoc tasks and provide cover for key finance roles when required.
Requirements
  • Consistent, accurate and controlled delivery of finance operations in line with policies and guidelines.
  • Recognised accounting qualification with 5+ years' finance experience, including at least one year outside practice.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial statement preparation; experience managing auditors and year‑end processes.
  • Highly structured, detail‑focused and able to produce accurate reporting and build trusted relationships.
  • Proactive, self‑motivated communicator with experience in fast‑changing environments.
  • Experience in treasury, banking and working capital management.
  • Knowledge of government and charitable funding mechanisms is advantageous.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and guide others.
Benefits
  • From £77,000 per annum basic salary.
  • Generous Pension Scheme – We invest in your future with employer contributions of up to 12%.
  • 30 Days Holiday + Bank Holidays – Enjoy a generous holiday allowance with the flexibility to take bank holidays when it suits you.
  • Enhanced Parental Leave – Supporting you during life's biggest moments.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme – Save 25‑39% on a new bike and accessories through salary sacrifice.
  • Home & Tech Savings – Get up to 8% off on IKEA and Currys products, spreading the cost over 12 months through salary sacrifice.
  • £1,000 Employee Referral Bonus – Know someone amazing? Get rewarded for bringing them on board!
  • Wellbeing Support – Access to Mental Health First Aiders, plus 24/7 online GP services and an Employee Assistance Programme for you and your family.
  • A Great Place to Work – We have a lovely Central London office in Holborn, and offer flexible and remote working arrangements.

Join us – let's prevent disease together.
