Job Overview
The post holder will be expected to undertake semi‑skilled craft duties to enable effective installation, maintenance and repair of a wide range of plant and equipment. Hard work involves day‑to‑day maintenance, fault repairs and testing as instructed by the Mechanical and Electrical Manager (M and E Manager) and other skilled trades. The postholder must keep a flexible attitude, manage time well, work alone or unsupervised when necessary and adhere to Health and Safety principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out basic maintenance and repair tasks on the following:
- Heating, hot and cold‑water systems
- Wastewater systems
- Emergency generators
- Air conditioning systems
- Firefighting equipment
- Lighting systems
- Domestic electrical appliances
- Portable appliance testing and minor repairs
- Patient beds, bedside tables, cot sides, etc.
- Catering equipment
- Plant room inspections and various other types of mechanical and electrical plant and equipment as required
- Identify solutions to faults and present repair and replacement options to the M&E Manager.
- Work within Estates planned maintenance programmes, planning own work to meet requirements.
- Carry out plantroom and workshop cleaning and keep all plant areas clean and tidy.
- Complete regular utilities meter readings for water, gas, electricity and fuel oil.
- Interpret and work from appropriate instructions, drawings and specifications.
- Record accurately details of works completed including time, date, job content, location and materials used.
- Update logbooks, registers and other statutory records as directed by the M&E Manager.
- Assist other Estates staff as directed by the M&E Manager.
Additional Estate Duties
- Power tools and access equipment will be provided by the Trust; the postholder is responsible for storage and security. Basic tools are to be supplied and maintained by the craftsperson.
- Fully participate in the effective running of a computer‑aided facilities management (CAFM) system where applicable.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of their work area and workshop/storage areas.
- Use a Trust credit card only for purchases of Trust materials/equipment; ensure card security.
- Attend training sessions, seminars and courses for self‑development as directed by the Head of Estates Operations or Estates M&E Managers, including manufacturer training courses for engineering plant and equipment as required.
- Wear the personal protection equipment provided and follow safety precautions; familiarise themselves with the Estates Department Tradesperson Safety Manual and ensure practices in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
- Familiarise themselves with Estates and Trust Policies and Procedures; always adhere to them and comment on possible improvements or inaccuracies when appropriate.
- Work to industry standards, local operating procedures and policies, including Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) guidelines.
- Possess a full UK driving licence and be prepared to use own car to travel between SCFT properties to undertake duties.
- Receive reimbursement for all authorised travel.
