Deputy Head of Engineering

Scenic & Event Fabrication £44,500 + overtime (additional £10,000 achievable)

Location: South London area (workshop-based with occasional site work)

A busy, specialist fabrication workshop that serves theatre, broadcast and live events is looking for an experienced Head of Engineering to lead a skilled metal‑fabrication team. This role is perfect for a hands‑on leader who can combine technical excellence with clear planning, strong safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Help lead fabrication teams to produce accurate, fit‑for‑purpose metalwork and assemblies from technical drawings and specifications.
  • Assist with creating, managing and tracking the department's project schedule in coordination with workshop operations.
  • Maintain and improve health, safety and environmental practices across the department; ensure compliance and correct PPE usage.
  • Oversee the maintenance, safe operation and inventory of departmental tools and machinery.
  • Help drive staff development: implementing training plans, overseeing apprenticeships, inductions and mentoring.
  • Support on‑site build activities when required and coordinate build handovers to client sites.
  • Promote positive team culture, good communication and high morale within the department.
Qualifications
  • Proven background in scenic / architectural / industrial fabrication with strong hands‑on MIG and TIG welding skills.
  • Relevant welding or engineering qualifications (NVQ, coded welding) are highly desirable.
  • Track record of interpreting complex technical drawings and translating them into accurate builds.
  • Solid knowledge of materials and construction techniques used in scenic and event fabrication.
  • Experience of planning and scheduling workshop workloads and leading small teams on site.
  • Strong working knowledge of workshop H&S; recognised H&S qualifications welcome.
  • Good IT literacy (Windows and cloud‑based office tools).
  • Calm, organised, decisive and a collaborative team player under pressure.
