A local council in Woolwich is seeking a Debt Manager to oversee the collection of sundry debts, manage team operations, and handle complex legal cases. The ideal candidate will have experience in debt recovery and excellent negotiation skills, along with the ability to lead and develop staff. This is an exciting opportunity to join an established team in the position of Debt Manager - Sundry Debt. A new post has been created for a period of 12 to 15 months whilst a project to replace financials system is undertaken. The post holder may also be involved in this replacement project.
The Corporate Debt Team is responsible for the issue and collection of sundry debts for all council directorates, liaising extensively with debtors to secure prompt payment, resolve disputes and provide assistance where debtors are in financial difficulties.
The Debt Manager will be responsible for managing the team's business as usual operations. They will undertake performance management to ensure duties are undertaken in accordance with service and financial procedures to maximise income and provide an effective and efficient service to debtors.
The post includes line management responsibilities so successful candidates must be committed to supporting and developing staff whilst also able to adhere to absence management, capability and disciplinary procedures when necessary.
The post will also be responsible for the more complex casework of the team, including the identification, escalation and preparation of debts for legal proceedings, working alongside the council's legal officers and attending court to represent the council.
Interested candidates must have experience of debt recovery along with excellent negotiation skills and the ability to communicate appropriately with a wide range of stakeholders. They should be able to critically review working practices and work alongside colleagues to implement change where required.
