Overview

Our well-established client law firm based in Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire is currently seeking Criminal Duty Solicitors to join their established team in the Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Essex Courts. The successful Duty Solicitors will manage their own caseload and represent clients in a mixture of criminal law matters, liaising with Courts, CPS, Police, Counsel and other professional bodies.

Responsibilities
  • Already be on the rota or due to commence being on the rota.
  • Interview and advise clients.
  • Undertake casework, managing the case from inception to conclusion.
  • Administer casework and keep the case management system up to date.
  • Ensure casework is promptly and efficiently billed and send bills to private clients and claim interim payments from the Legal Aid Agency when appropriate.
  • Regular review of cases.
  • Attend court (including Saturday court) to deal with clients.
  • Keep up to date with changes in law and practice.
  • Attend training courses.
  • Attend police station when required, even outside normal hours.
  • Hold the 24‑hour emergency line as requested.
  • Administer administrative support, deal with legal documents and liaise with professionals within the legal and medical industries such as high‑level psychologists.
  • Flexible working is possible once court and police station work is completed.
Qualifications
  • Admission as a Solicitor and holding the CLAS certificate (Duty).
  • Experience of Legal Aid practice.
  • Knowledge of billing and legal procedures.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to prioritise and manage casework.
  • Strong initiative with limited supervision and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Legible handwriting and car ownership.
  • One year of court experience (required).
  • Licence certification and CLAS Certificate (required).
  • Legal Aid, client care, drafting & advocacy skills and accreditation.
