To assist the Local Court Magistrate with the diversion of defendants who have or are suspected of having a mental illness, mental disorder or a cognitive impairment from the Criminal Justice System (Court and Correctional Centres) into the community.
Statewide Community and Court Liaison Service (SCCLS) delivered by Justice Health NSW offers mental health support in Local Courts across NSW. This service conducts thorough evaluations and, when suitable, offers suggestions to magistrates for diverting individuals away from custody and into suitable treatment options.
The SCCLS is currently expanding to include 58 local courts in rural, regional, and metro locations.
