Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to work in our Mental Health Liaison Team based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

This job attracts a Recruitment and Retention payment of £25,000 and up to £8,000 relocation allowance. The RRP payment is paid in the following instalments:

  • £5,000 on appointment
  • £5,000 at 12‑month anniversary of employment
  • £6,500 at 30‑month anniversary of employment
  • £8,500 at 48‑month anniversary of employment

About the Team

The post is in working‑age Liaison Psychiatry. You will support the wider nursing team and ensure continuity of care across the week in a general hospital setting, providing specialist medical and psychiatric assessment to people aged 17 and over referred from the Emergency Department and inpatient wards.

You will be expected to have expertise in working‑age adults’ mental health, organic mental states, medically unexplained symptoms, the interplay between physical and mental health problems and management of psychiatric crises.

We participate in nationally recognised Liaison Psychiatry research and teach students from Brighton and Sussex Medical Schools, as well as nursing and paramedic students. You will also lead development of new care pathways and integrated psychiatric care aligned with the NHS Long Term Plan.

Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of appointment.
  • Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
  • Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
  • Excellent knowledge in the specialty and bio‑psycho‑social clinical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work with both general adult and older adult patients and evidence of relevant experience.
  • Ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training, lead teams, and commit to shared leadership and collaborative working.
  • Active participation in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • Experience relevant to NHS or comparable services, including addictions psychiatry, neuropsychiatry or psychotherapy.
