Job description
Overview

Consultant in Spinal Surgery, part of the Spines Surgical Team within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. The role has been created to cope with increasing demand for degenerative adult spinal pathology and major trauma. At present the role will not include paediatric deformity but there is potential for future development.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in a 1 in 6 week on-call rota to cover all spinal surgery emergencies and referrals.
  • Support the on-call week with two spinal fellows (08:00–20:00 weekdays) and one spinal fellow (08:00–20:00 weekend) and the Orthopaedic Registrar on call overnight (20:00–08:00).
  • Independent operative of complex spine trauma, adult degenerative spinal surgery (cervical and lumbar), metastatic spinal cord compression, spinal infections and cauda equina syndrome.
Qualifications
  • On the Specialist Register and must have obtained the FRCS (Tr&Ortho / Neurosurg) or equivalent.
  • Recognised advanced experience in spinal surgery and a track record lending credibility to a career dedicated to spinal surgery, including specialist fellowship experience.
  • Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

Compensation and Contract

Excellent consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum. This post is full‑time, but consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
