Job description
Consultant General Emergency and Benign Colorectal Surgeon

The closing date is 18 January 2026

We are recruiting for a Consultant within our friendly and well‑established Surgical Specialties Division to expand Colorectal surgery capacity as well as increase the sub‑specialty interests of other existing Consultants and augmentation of the on‑call rota.

You will join an existing team of 16 consultants, 4 upper GI (1 fixed term), 7 Colorectal, four Breast and one Vascular, providing surgical care in Chesterfield for patients from North Derbyshire and surrounding areas.

The General Surgery Department is expanding the number of consultants to meet increasing demand which will result in a change in the current frequency of on call duties once further appointees are in place.

The successful candidate may provide regular colonoscopy lists and will work with several other established Colorectal surgeons to deliver the sub‑speciality service and cancer pathway.

The post will include a commitment to the "Duty Surgeon" daytime general on‑call rota along with night on call.

There will also be an opportunity to work with consultant colleagues in the development of new, more effective, patient care pathways.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate requisite numbers of index logbook operations for emergency surgery and elective benign colorectal surgery. This will allow the candidate to function as general and benign colorectal surgeon, although they will have opportunity to have a mentor from within the department. An interest in inflammatory bowel disease will be welcome.
