Job description
Overview

We seek an enthusiastic and self‑motivated person to join our forward‑thinking team. The post holder is expected to provide predominantly Otology services and to lead on the development of the Otology service. We are looking for a team player with an enthusiasm for teaching and training to join the team of Consultants in the Ear Nose and Throat Department of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The post is to start immediately for the successful candidate. The postholder will be part of the on‑call consultant rota, which is 1:5 non‑resident and supported by both middle grade and junior on‑call tiers who undertake the 1st‑stand 2nd‑on call management of emergency ENT patients.

Responsibilities

The surgeon will help to further expand our elective surgical services at Burnley General Hospital whilst also contributing to managing complex patients at Royal Blackburn Hospital. The post holder will hold regular independent outpatient clinics and will be responsible for formalising patient care pathways and responsibility for pre, post and peri‑operative care of patients undergoing surgery as well as provision of care for the in‑patients. This involves care of adult and paediatric patients.

The department is supported by the following: one Associate Specialist, four Specialty Doctors, one ST3+ trainee, one CT, one JCF, one FY2 trainee, one GPST and one FY1 trainee, with further support from one ACP and one Specialist Nurse.

We have a strong emphasis on training and have a strong commitment to support, mentorship and development of all of our staff and have regular multidisciplinary meetings. The candidate will work in a multi‑disciplinary team approach alongside medical staff, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals. Clinical research, quality improvement and service development are actively encouraged.

Professional Development

The programme of support for each individual doctor will be flexible depending on his/her particular needs and experience. You will be required to participate in Consultant Appraisal and Job Plan Reviews on an annual basis and the revalidation process in line with your professional registration.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants will hold full registration with GMC and a licence to practise. Applicants will either be on the specialist register or be within six months of their expected date of CCT at the time of interview. Specialist Registrar or equivalent grade experience in ENT surgery leading to CCT or equivalent is required. Applicants must possess the following skills: Able to fully integrate within the ENT unit and develop own specialist interest that complements the existing skills/interests of the directorate. Able to communicate with and motivate colleagues both medical and non‑medical, evidence of good team work and the ability to lead a team.

A satisfactory medical examination is a condition of employment for Medical and Dental staff in the NHS. Applicants are requested to note that any person recommended for appointment in connection with this post will be referred to the DBS (Disclosure & Barring System) for their clearance.

Contract and Logistics

This post is subject to the New Consultant Contract 2003. The appointee will be required to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes travel time by car of the relevant Trust Hospital base. The Trust will reimburse certain expenses relating to removal and relocation when required; the expenses refunded shall reflect the actual costs involved but will not exceed £8,000.
