Consultant-Adult Inherited Metabolic Diseases

This is an exciting opportunity to apply for the role of consultant in Adult Inherited Metabolic Diseases. This is a permanent position working in the Charles Dent Metabolic Unit within The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery – a large specialist service managing 2000 adults with inherited disorders of metabolism and lysosomal storage disorders.

Main duties of the job
  • Run 3 outpatient clinics per week (including general inherited metabolic disease clinics & lysosomal storage disorder clinics). Patients are seen face to face to facilitate biochemical monitoring and investigations, but each consultant also has a virtual clinic too.
  • Attend a weekly MDT
  • Participate in a regular transition clinic (6–8 clinics annually) with paediatric colleagues at Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital
  • Participate in a shared rota to manage repeat prescriptions and answer queries from the metabolic pharmacy
  • Attend and participate in regular unit morbidity and mortality meetings
  • Support the training of overseas clinical fellows attached to the unit and local trainees in chemical pathology / metabolic medicine
  • Attend and participate in a weekly MDT (as part of a shared rota) – including laboratory and clinical IMD staff from NHNN and GOSH
  • Review patients as needed in the metabolic day-ward and metabolic kitchen
  • Participate in a shared rota to review inpatient consultations – across the UCLH hospital sites
  • Support the team in expanding outreach services and clinics in accordance with the NHSE network model.
  • Participate in a 1:3 consultant‑led on‑call rota – providing out of hours advice by telephone.
  • Support the team in participating in disease registries and clinical trials of new treatments for inherited metabolic disorders.

Person Specification
Knowledge
  • Evidence of at least X1 years’ experience (X2 years is desirable) in the management of patients with inherited metabolic disease (IMD), on the background of: oA CCT in chemical pathology/metabolic medicine, or oSub‑speciality training in paediatric inherited metabolic disease, with additional experience in the management of adult patients, or oA CCT in general internal medicine or neurology.
  • Eligible for Full UK GMC Registration or equivalent on GMC Specialist register in relevant Specialty within 6 months of expected date of CCT. (NB: Non‑UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register and Specialist register in relevant Specialty by the date of the interview).
  • understanding of current changes in the management and organisational structures of the NHS
  • knowledge of Clinical Governance framework of NHS
  • A further qualification such as MSc, MD or PhD
Clinical Experience
  • knowledge of Clinical Governance framework of NHS
  • Experience of the management of patients with inherited metabolic disease (at least 1 year)
  • Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary team and understanding of the different roles
  • Excellent understanding of the needs of people with complex conditions and learning disability
  • An understanding of patient centred care and self‑care approach.
