A health service provider in Scarborough offers a fixed-term trainee position for individuals who have completed foundation training. The role combines clinical responsibilities with a research project in colorectal surgery, providing an opportunity to develop core competencies. This full-time post includes a salary of £52,656 per year and comprehensive benefits, including holidays and support programs. Applicants should have a medical qualification and be eligible for GMC registration.
The aim of this post is to provide a trainee who has completed foundation training and needs more experience at CT 2/3 level before applying for an ST post. This provides an opportunity to undertake a period of supervised clinical and laboratory based research. NB: We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants, so please apply early to avoid disappointment.
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic core trainee who has completed their foundation training. This 2‑year post allows the core trainee to conduct a piece of supervised research while gaining more clinical experience before their ST application. By the end of the candidate's tenure we envisage that he/she would have excelled in all core surgical competencies and be in an enviable position for competitive entry into higher surgical training.
The colorectal department at York and Scarborough is active in research and we have collaborated with the University of York to investigate the role of sodium channels in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (SCION – Sodium channels in Colorectal cancer – an Ion Study). You will have space at the Brackenbury laboratory in the University of York, where research supervision will be provided during your tenure. We have secured local and national funding from the Elsie May Sykes award and Bowel Cancer Research UK to fund the laboratory costs of your research and we encourage the candidate to obtain a higher degree as part of the project. We expect the candidate to generate presentations and publications from their research output.
The candidate will receive a salary for their on‑call commitments at CT level in General Surgery at Scarborough Hospital. The on‑call rota will be 1:9. This is split into two shifts 8am until 8pm and then a separate shift 8pm‑8am. The on‑call is always supported by the surgical registrar. The candidate has no elective commitment and is expected to conduct their research. The post will entail a combination of academic and clinical work with an approximately 30:70 split initially, subject to review based on satisfactory progress of the research work.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check: This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

UK Registration: Applicants must have current UK professional registration. For further information please see NHS Careers website.
