Job description
Overview

The role involves working with prisoners, probationers and staff, applying psychological competence to reduce risk of harm and re‑offending through risk assessment, research, consultancy, training and supervision. It includes line management responsibilities and is non‑operational offender facing.

Responsibilities
  • Provide authoritative professional advice on offender targets, objectives and suitable placement.
  • Offer professional opinion on reports such as life, parole and other assessment reports.
  • Develop strategy and plans for programme assessments and manage assessments for indeterminate sentence offenders.
  • Provide consultancy support to senior management and other teams regarding psychological services and outcomes.
  • Conduct research, including data gathering and analysis.
  • Supervise trainee forensic psychology staff and provide designated professional supervision toward chartered and registered status.
  • Train, mentor and support trainee psychologists and other staff (e.g., intervention staff).
  • Ensure staff development in accordance with key competencies, gateways, policies and procedures impacting staff and prisoners.
  • Lead risk assessment and risk management.
  • Participate in risk assessments of offenders, including self‑harm assessments and ACCT (Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork).
  • Deliver and oversee complex treatment management programmes.
  • Provide specialist consultancy on areas such as Sexual Offending Strategy, Indeterminate Sentenced Prisoner Strategy.
  • Act as a negotiation adviser where appropriate.
  • Serve as a professional witness in parole board hearings, multi‑agency meetings and court proceedings.
  • Maintain ongoing CPD and HCPC registration.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Qualified forensic or clinical psychologist with HCPC registration or in process of obtaining registration (confirmation within 6 months if not yet registered).
  • Experience in providing clinical supervision.
  • Completed training in evidence‑based treatment models and best practice.
  • Strong background in psychology, with evidence of work in offender or forensic settings.
Working Hours & Benefits

Standard full‑time hours: 37 hours per week (excluding unpaid breaks). Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid working where business needs allow, are available. Annual leave starts 1 March (pro‑rated for non‑standard patterns). Pension scheme as per Civil Service (choice between two options).
