Job description

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Urology at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the unit’s clinical work including clinics, operating sessions, Multi‑Disciplinary Meetings and ward rounds, and will also contribute to the emergency surgical workload of the team.

This post would be ideally suited for a candidate who wishes to gain more experience in Urology prior to taking up Higher Specialty training or for one who is pursuing the alternate portfolio pathway for entry to specialist register.

Patient Care
  • Primary charge of all patients admitted to the service.
  • Day‑to‑day care of patients, including outpatient clinics and provide inpatient care of urology patients including assessment of acutely ill patients.
  • Supervise Core and Foundation trainees including guiding in writing admission notes, continuation notes, discharge summaries, and other associated letters as well as prescribing medications and diets for patients.
Clinical Activities
  • Observe and assist in theatre as directed by the consultant.
  • Liaise closely with multi‑disciplinary teams involved in patient care.
  • Attend and support weekly multi‑disciplinary team meetings.
  • Participate in audit and research projects.
Teaching and Education
  • Teach other staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Participate in the fortnightly registrar teaching programme aimed at management of common urological conditions as well as towards the final FRCS exams.
Research Activity
  • Allocated one day per week for ongoing research activities in the department with opportunity to present and publish, for candidates with demonstrable research experience.
Work Week
  • A typical work week would involve 2 clinics, 2 diagnostic sessions (flexible cystoscopy / prostate biopsy), 2 theatre sessions, 1 SPA & Administration, 2 flexible sessions as per departmental requirements / individual needs.
Relationships
  • The post-holder will be expected to take on duties and commitments at the level of a senior registrar. The on‑call commitment will be at the Royal Liverpool site as a surgical registrar.
Clinical Commitments
  • The post holder will have a slot on the 1:9 on‑call surgical registrar rota. If the candidate has full or provisional JAG accreditation they may be asked to provide some endoscopy sessions, this will be negotiated with the individual depending on experience.
Leadership and Management
  • The appointee will be responsible for the leadership of his/her team. The appointee will be responsible to the Consultant Upper GI Surgeon (Mr Nathan Stephens), for the effective and efficient use of resources.
Professional Performance
  • The appointee will have continuing responsibility for the proper function of the work. It is a requirement that if the employee has concerns about the professional performance of a member of the medical staff, they have a duty to speak to the person concerned. If the matter is potentially serious, or satisfaction is not obtained with the direct approach, such concerns should be discussed with the Clinical Director, if satisfaction again is not obtained, concerns should be discussed with the Associate Medical Director.
Infection Control
  • All medical and dental staff have a duty to practice safe medicine in relation to infection control and other issues. Appointees will therefore be expected to attend infection control learning opportunities once per year as a minimum, and to follow Trust Infection Control policies and guidelines.
Leave
  • Annual and study leave will be granted to the maximum extent allowable by the Medical & Dental Whitley Council regulations, but, in accordance with the Trust's leave policy.
