Job description
Fellowship Overview

Day Case Anaesthetic Fellowship focusing on BADS criteria for day case surgery. The fellowship runs for 12 months, commencing February 2026, and is offered across LGH, LRI and GGH.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Run the majority of normal working days in day case anaesthetic activities.
  • Participate in junior on‑call rota (obstetrics, ICU or theatre) on a 1:8 resident basis with a maximum shift duration of 12.5 h.
  • Develop independently to deliver theatre sessions under consultant supervision with mentorship throughout the fellowship.
  • Attend virtual anaesthetic review meetings, theatre management group and productivity board meetings to understand service efficiency.
Non‑Clinical Responsibilities
  • Establish an understanding of Trust structure, roles and responsibilities of how to deliver the day‑case list under direct supervision, attending key VAR (Virtual Anaesthetic Review meeting), Theatre Management Group and Theatre productivity Board meeting to understand the effectiveness and efficiency of the EMPCC.
  • Plan to attend BADS meeting, develop innovative ideas to improve efficiency and care, develop management and leadership skills within 6 months of Fellowship.
  • Gain knowledge of the principles of GIRFT to improve patient care efficiently by self‑directed learning, accessing reading materials and webinars available on the Future NHS website.
  • Understand how shared learning is being utilised by the NHS to implement changes rapidly and efficiently in clinical practice.
  • Appreciate the power of data to do audits and drive changes within healthcare including the implications of coding and data validation by clinicians.
  • Show awareness of some of the national data reporting systems for anaesthetic and surgical specialities to develop evidence‑based practice.
Supervision & Development

The fellow will be supervised by Dr Kaushik, Dr Kukreja or Dr Khandia. They will oversee clinical duties, ensure adequate education and management opportunities, and co‑develop a personal development plan. Fellows may rotate between the three sites to gain exposure to different day‑case specialities.

Eligibility & Experience

Applicants must hold primary FRCA or equivalent, have a minimum of four years anaesthetic experience, be registered with GMC, and be eligible to undertake UK day‑case work. The fellowship is open to trainees, CCT holders and senior doctors seeking further day‑case experience, leadership and management skills.
