Job Title: Clerk of Works - Construction

The role

As a Clerk of Works – Construction, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a unique opportunity to work on high-profile, high-impact infrastructure developments, including docking and berthing facilities for Astute Class submarines. Your work will directly contribute to national defence and help shape the future of naval engineering.

Day-to-day, you’ll be a key part of our Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) team, supporting the delivery of critical construction programmes that underpin the future of Royal Navy operations. You’ll provide independent, site-based oversight to ensure construction activities meet defined standards for quality, safety, and compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Monitoring implementation of Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS), site inductions, and safe systems of work, and participating in site meetings.
  • Building strong relationships with contractors to identify and resolve issues early.
  • Supporting quality assurance by checking workmanship against standards and project drawings.
  • Recording site observations and progress updates using approved digital platforms.
  • Ensuring temporary works are properly controlled and compliant with regulations.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential Experience
  • Proven experience in site assurance and supervision on active construction projects, ideally in high-risk or nuclear-regulated environments.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety management, including RAMS, temporary works, and CDM 2015 compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor quality against technical specifications and inspection plans.
  • Skilled in contractor oversight and stakeholder engagement.
  • Knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022 for higher-risk buildings.
Qualifications
  • HNC or equivalent in a construction discipline
  • ICE/CIOB/APM chartered status (or working towards) - Desirable
  • IEMA/SEATS or equivalent environmental awareness training - Desirable
  • IPAF/PASMA certifications - Desirable
  • Temporary Works Coordinator qualification - Desirable
Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
