Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern is 30 hours per week, long day pattern on dayshift and rotational nightshift.

Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.

Please be advised that, effective 1 April 2026, the full‑time working hours for all Agenda for Change posts will be reduced to 36 hours.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Alcohol and Drug Recovery Services for a Charge Nurse to join our Inpatient Services on a permanent basis.

Key responsibilities
  • Assess care needs and evaluate programmes of care to ensure the delivery of high‑quality care to patients.
  • Manage a ward area in the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse, including supervision and deployment of staff.
  • Support education for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the clinical area.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Charge Nurse to manage nursing manpower and ward supplies, without direct financial responsibility.
  • Report operationally to the Senior Charge Nurse and be professionally accountable to the Professional Nurse Lead.
Qualifications and skills
  • First‑level Registered Mental Health Nurse with practical experience providing nursing care and treatment to individuals with alcohol and/or drug dependence.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development with an emphasis on alcohol or drug related care and treatment intervention(s).
  • Strong desire to practice within an inpatient alcohol and drug recovery service.
Location and initial posting

The initial base for this post will be within Kershaw Inpatients, Gartnavel Royal Hospital.
