Business Development Manager – Legal Sector | Newcastle upon Tyne (Hybrid Working Available) | Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience + Bonus Scheme | Contract: Full-time, Permanent

A highly regarded and long-established full-service law firm based in Newcastle upon Tyne is seeking an experienced Business Development Manager to join its growing Marketing & Business Development team. With a strong national client base and an excellent reputation for high-quality, partner-led legal advice, this firm is committed to strategic growth and client excellence. This is a pivotal role within a forward-thinking firm that combines a strong heritage with a modern, client-focused approach.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Business Development & Marketing, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving firm-wide and departmental business development initiatives to support continued growth. This will involve working closely with partners, fee earners, and business services teams to build new and existing client relationships, target key markets and sectors, and enhance the firm’s profile and presence. This position offers the opportunity to make a significant impact, contributing to the strategic direction of business development activity across the firm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and help deliver strategic business development plans aligned with firm-wide and departmental goals.
  • Identify new opportunities with existing and prospective clients, fostering long-term relationships and encouraging cross-selling of services.
  • Act as the business development lead on key client development initiatives, tenders, and work-winning projects.
  • Support partners and fee earners with client engagement, market research, and tracking of opportunities.
  • Conduct market and competitor analysis to inform strategy and positioning.
  • Prepare compelling proposals, pitches, and directory submissions; maintain supporting materials and case studies.
  • Identify and manage speaking opportunities and events to enhance firm visibility.
  • Use the firm’s CRM to monitor client interactions, manage campaigns, and report on performance.
  • Provide regular updates and market insight to senior leadership and practice groups.
  • Monitor legal market trends and proactively advise on BD opportunities and risks.
  • Ensure business development activities are aligned with the firm’s values and provide value for investment.

  • A proven track record in business development, ideally within a legal or professional services environment.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence at partner level.
  • Experience preparing bids, tenders and managing client development programmes.
  • A confident, proactive, and self-motivated approach to work.
  • High levels of commercial awareness and an understanding of client and market dynamics.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Experience using CRM systems and delivering measurable BD outcomes.
