Job description
Overview

Contract Type: Permanent. Working Hours: 37 Hours per week. Colchester City Council is reimagining Building Control services in Colchester, Britain’s first and newest City. We are looking for an exceptional Building Control Team Leader / Principal Inspector to help drive excellence, mentor others, and support the delivery of safe, high-quality development across one of the UK’s most exciting growth areas.

Our Culture: People Before Process, Leadership with Purpose. We value a people-first, coaching-led culture where collaboration, learning, and shared purpose underpin everything we do. You will join a service where mentoring and support are part of everyday life, your input shapes direction, and your leadership makes a difference. Integrity, collaboration, and wellbeing matter as much as technical excellence. You will be part of a connected, supportive team with shared goals and mutual respect.

Role

Lead, Support, and Set the Standard

This is a critical role in our service, sitting just beneath the Building Control Manager. As Building Control Team Leader / Principal Inspector, you will handle the most complex cases, provide day-to-day support to inspectors, and help shape how we deliver a modern, responsive service. In this role, you will:

  • Take the lead on more complex and high-risk Building Control cases across the city.
  • Act as a senior technical reference point for colleagues, offering daily guidance, mentoring, and support.
  • Work collaboratively with developers, architects, and internal stakeholders to drive innovation, safety, and quality.
  • Champion a consistent, high-performing team culture where learning and accountability go hand in hand.
  • Support the Manager in the development of team practices, standards, and strategy.

This is your chance to make a real impact, using your experience not only to solve problems but to empower others.

What We're Looking For

We are seeking a qualified, experienced Registered Building Inspector (RBI) at Class 2D or above, who brings:

  • Significant experience with Building Control.
  • Sound technical judgement and the ability to guide others confidently.
  • A natural mentoring style of someone who leads through support, not hierarchy.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to build trust with colleagues and external partners alike.
  • A positive, calm, and solutions-focused mindset.
  • A genuine desire to support both people and progress.
Benefits
  • Competitive salary with additional Market Forces Supplement.
  • Excellent Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Annual Leave entitlement up to 26 days a year, plus additional leave on 8 public holidays and extra statutory leave for 2 days at Christmas.
  • Option to take extra flex days off each month and to purchase additional holiday days.
  • Flexible benefits including pre-tax Stream with attractive interest rates, or salary advances if needed.
  • Payment of professional memberships and fees, mileage and subsistence allowances.
  • Vine Extras discount scheme, tax-free cycle schemes, and E-vehicle loan schemes.
  • Discounted fitness memberships, private health care options, and staff incentives for events and culture.
  • Diverse learning opportunities and career progression through apprenticeships, coaching, mentoring, leadership and management qualifications.
  • Employee Assistance Programmes and in-house health and wellbeing activities.
