Job Summary

This is a senior clinical role for an experienced gynaecology nurse who is confident leading teams within an acute inpatient setting. The Band 6 Sister Charge Nurse will support the operational management of the ward while maintaining high standards of clinical care, patient safety and staff development. Gynaecology experience is essential to ensure safe leadership, effective decision making and continuity of care across the patient pathway.

The Gynaecology ward provides inpatient care across a range of complex surgical specialties including gynaecology, plastics and reconstructive surgery, ENT, vascular and thoracic surgery. The ward manages patients with varying levels of acuity and complexity, requiring strong clinical leadership, effective coordination and consistently high standards of personalised care. Working within a fast paced multidisciplinary environment, the team places a strong emphasis on quality improvement, professional standards and patient experience, with gynaecology forming a core and essential part of the service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strong clinical and professional leadership across the ward
  • Manage a clinical caseload and oversee individualised patient care
  • Support, supervise and develop nursing staff and HCAs
  • Contribute to recruitment, induction, appraisals and mandatory training compliance
  • Coordinate admissions, discharges and bed management in liaison with the MDT
  • Ensure safe medicines management and high-quality documentation
  • Lead on patient safety checks, audits and quality improvement activity
  • Manage incidents, complaints and conflict in a timely and professional manner
  • Use electronic rostering to ensure safe and effective staffing
  • Represent the ward at meetings and governance forums when required
Ideal Candidate & Key Requirements
  • Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Significant post registration experience within acute inpatient care
  • Proven experience working on a surgical ward
  • Previous experience in a Band 6 or acting Band 6 role
  • Essential experience in gynaecology nursing
  • Experience supervising staff and leading shifts
  • Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills
  • Confidence working across multiple surgical specialties
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • A proactive approach to patient safety and service improvement
