The Respiratory Intervention unit performs a variety of respiratory procedures, such as bronchoscopy and pleural interventions, to aid cancer diagnosis and symptom management of patients with cancer and other conditions. The nurse will be required to assist with respiratory procedures in the procedure room and to care for patients post procedure in the recovery area. They will deliver a high standard of patient care, which is patient centred and in consultation with the patient, their relatives and the medical team.

Key Responsibilities

• Complete admission documentation prior to the patients procedure, taking into account their physical health and psychological needs.
• Escalate any patient issues to the medical team prior to their procedure.
• To have an understanding of different consent forms and when they are used.
• To have an understanding of the use of WHO checklists and to participate in answering the questions when the WHO is performed.
• Assist the medical team with procedures.
• Enable patients undergoing respiratory procedures to tolerate the examination providing comfort and reassurance.
• Monitor patients during their procedure and in recovery, performing and documenting observations, recognising deteriorating patients and escalating concerns immediately to the medical team.
• Participate in the safe manual handling and positioning of patients.
• Ensure that all bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy equipment is cleaned and maintained correctly, according to manufacturer guidelines.
• Perform cannulation and venepuncture (training will be provided).
• Perform blood glucose monitoring and elevate any anomalies.
• Able to recognise and use PPE appropriately for infectious patients. (All staff must be fit tested to specific FFP3 masks).
• To recognise and respond to an emergency situation.
• Recognise when a patient’s condition is deteriorating, escalating to senior staff/medical team.
