Job summary

Job description
Position Overview

A part‑time Microbiology Laboratory Technician (Saturday, Sunday and Monday – 22.5 hours per week) is required to join the Microbiology Department at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. The successful candidate will work primarily at Queens Hospital in Romford but will also be required to work at King George Hospital in Goodmayes as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and process clinical specimens for testing in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Work across all areas of the laboratory on a rotational basis, including cross‑site working between Queens Hospital and King George Hospital.
  • Load and troubleshoot analysers and carry out basic maintenance within the boundary of the role.
  • Undertake regular competence assessment and performance appraisal to assure delivery of a high quality service and facilitate personal development.
  • Support a high daily workload efficiently, including flexibility to work flexible hours during the week, weekends and bank holidays.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A‑Level or NVQ Level 3 qualifications ideally in a science‑related subject, or equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • Computer literate, able to follow standard operating procedures and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A keen willingness to learn and a collaborative, flexible attitude to work effectively within a busy, high volume department.
Working Arrangements

Initial training will occur on three weekdays before the candidate starts weekend duties. Ongoing training is provided both within the Trust and the Microbiology Department. The role is rotational and cross‑site between the two hospital sites.
