Job Description

As an Associate, you will be responsible for conducting fundamental investment research, assisting in building recommendations, implementing fundamental investments strategies, and monitoring and managing portfolio investments. You may also support the identification, scoping, and implementation of value creation opportunities by conducting research, analysis, and preparing presentations.

Team Description

We are hiring an Associate for the Direct Private Equity group within our Private Equity department. DPE manages a C$48 billion portfolio, with more than 60 investment professionals investing out of offices in London and Toronto. The team focuses mainly on co-control investments into large cap companies, in partnership with private equity funds, founders or families, with the flexibility to also invest in significant minority stakes. We focus on four main sector verticals; Technology, Healthcare, Services and Industrials.

Accountabilities
  • Compile industry, market and asset level data and financial information to support research
  • Build and leverage relationships with industry participants and management teams
  • Perform fundamental research and present research ideas to broader group
  • Perform due diligence on opportunities, including financial, company and sector diligence, to determine investment merits and risks
  • Develop company financial models and perform valuation analyses; apply statistical analysis to support investment decisions
  • Participate in evaluation, including sharing views on overall investment attractiveness based on findings from diligence work
  • Prepare analytical investment reviews and recommendations in collaboration with the team, including industry overviews, written investment rationales and due diligence reviews
  • Participate in presentation of investment recommendations to the Investment Committee and Board as required
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of existing portfolios
  • Support transition of new assets into CPPIB portfolio by identifying benchmarks, building financial models and providing rigorous project management support
Qualifications
  • Experience working in deal environments including supporting acquisitions, diligence and / or asset management activities
  • Strong research, analytical, financial modeling, valuation, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively
  • Advanced computer / technical skills – MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong ability to work in a variety of team environments
  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in relevant field
  • An advanced degree or certification (CFA) is an asset
