Job summary

Pencil in the United Kingdom is seeking a Financial Controller to own financial controls, cash flow, and day-to-day processes across Pencil's finance function. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you'll build the controls framework and lead month-end close as Pencil scales.

You will review management accounts and revenue recognition, manage treasury and bank payments, and guide AI-enabled finance workflows to improve speed, accuracy, and insights.

Qualifications

• Qualified accountant with UK experience (ACCA/ACA/CIMA).
• 5 years of finance experience, including 2 years in industry.
• Experience owning financial controls in a fast-paced scaling business (SaaS/tech).
• Comfortable managing cash flow with bank sign-off.
• Track record of senior judgement calls (accruals, revenue treatment, risk).
• Proficient with modern finance tooling (Xero, ApprovalMax, Maxio).
• Demonstrable AI skills to optimize finance workflows.

Responsibilities

• Own and strengthen internal control framework across business cycles.
• Review management accounts, revenue recognition, and AP runs.
• Own monthly workings for internally developed costs and audits.
• Manage cash flow forecasting and treasury; sign-off on bank payments.
• Provide senior judgement to finance staff on complex questions.
• Manage banking queries, vendor ownership, and AI policy.
• Streamline finance operations leveraging AI.
