University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust

The closing date is 09 January 2026

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. Please see below for the detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

Are you a qualified Critical Care Outreach Advanced Clinical Practitioner looking for a new challenge in a large tertiary centre? We are recruiting highly motivated, dynamic and innovative members to join our existing team. We welcome applicants from nursing and allied health professional backgrounds, as well as qualified ACPs from other specialties with previous critical care or emergency department experience who will complete the National Outreach Enhanced and Advanced competencies during their supernumerary period.

UHS CCOT service was established in 2001 and operates 24/7, covering approximately 1200 adult beds across Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital. The CCOT ACPs work collaboratively with ward teams across all specialist areas, providing high‑quality advanced–level care and management of acutely ill adult patients and patients at risk of deterioration or other immediate life‑threatening events.

About us

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely demonstrates strong time management and commitment to innovation. Personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Over‑reliance on generic, AI‑generated content may lead to rejection if many candidates submit identical or similar information.

At UHS we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We are committed to creating an anti‑racist, anti‑discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive and contribute.

Job responsibilities

We have a dedicated Consultant Intensivist providing regular formal clinical supervision and education. We are committed to supporting your ongoing development across the 4 pillars of advanced practice, providing you with the opportunity to explore research, audit, service improvement projects, formal and information education and teaching opportunities, and the development of your leadership and advanced clinical skills.

What you'll do

The CCOT ACP responds to acute referrals and emergency calls for any adult patient across the organisation. You will undertake a comprehensive patient assessment, critically analyse clinical findings, formulate differential diagnoses, initiate treatment to manage and stabilise the clinical condition, and evaluate its impact. You will avoid unnecessary critical care admissions and facilitate escalation of care decisions. You will instigate critical care intervention at the patient's bedside before appropriate admission to critical care. Protected 20% non‑clinical time is allocated for advanced practice portfolio development, educational opportunities, service improvement and QI projects.

What we're looking for

  • Significant experience within the speciality.
  • Willingness to work internal rotation, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
