Job Summary

An exciting new role has been established as part of the colposcopy service at Barnsley Hospital for a Colposcopy Nurse and Cervical Screening Provider Lead. We are seeking an experienced BSCCP-accredited Nurse Colposcopist to join the team. The successful candidate will practice autonomously, undertaking diagnostic, therapeutic and treatment procedures, and may act as a Colposcopy trainer in line with BSCCP requirements. The role involves supporting and developing the colposcopy service to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care, coordinating clinic capacity, working collaboratively with the Lead Consultant Colposcopist and contributing to clinical objectives. This role will lead the Trust’s cervical screening programme and work closely with clinicians and the Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS). Dedicated administrative support is provided. Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the colposcopy service to ensure seamless and high-quality patient care.
  • Maintain adherence to national standards for patient safety and clinical practice, including preparing and reporting on national audits and reports.
  • Collaborate with the Colposcopy team to support the development and delivery of the cervical screening service, aligning with NHS England service specifications.
  • Oversee the effective and efficient operational management of the Colposcopy Service on a day‑to‑day basis, ensuring smooth service delivery.
Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Professional clinical knowledge acquired through a degree supplemented by diploma-level specialist training, a management qualification or equivalent experience.
  • NMC registered nurse.
  • Qualification in nurse colposcopy – NSCCB.
  • Specialist knowledge of health-related screening.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the NHSCSP pathways.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Holder of an NHSCSP approved CSPL training qualification.

Essential Experience

  • Significant experience of clinical responsibility for screening services.
  • Experience in a colposcopy treatment clinic.
  • Experience in gynaecology.
  • Experience with pathways in cancer, woman’s services, pathology and/or governance.
  • Knowledge of the NHSCSP audit of invasive cervical cancers and ability to demonstrate knowledge across disciplines.
  • Aware of guidance for managing NHS screening incidents and the required process, ensuring all relevant staff are informed.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Experience ensuring that operational policies and quality management systems are implemented across the programme in conjunction with clinical and operational leads.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of clinical responsibility for cervical screening services.
  • Experience completing the audit of invasive cervical cancers.
  • Experience attending meetings.
  • Knowledge of Barnsley’s cervical screening activity.
  • Experience with the NHSCSP.
