Senior Data Engineer - Emerging Propositions (All Genders)

The Emerging Propositions Data Engineering team is responsible for enabling and evolving product offerings in Beauty, Designer and Pre-owned categories. We solve customer problems related to unique customer experiences and assortment properties like high number of makeup shades, distinct presentation of luxury brands or dedicated data models for pre-owned articles.

As a Senior Data Engineer you will design, develop and operate the data infrastructure, datasets and data products. The technical scope covers large-scale batch processing, data warehouses, ETL, data analysis and data observability.

• Be in the driver's seat. You enjoy being proactive, tackling complex business problems and taking the initiative to independently explore and understand them.

• Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Engineers, Analysts, and stakeholders across Emerging Propositions and Zalando to create a positive impact on customers.

• Play a key role in the design, planning, development of datasets and data products.

• Make informed technology and design decisions, taking ownership of these choices, and clearly communicating the architectural trade-offs involved.

• Adopt an operational excellence mindset, participating in service operational duties, including data observability and maintaining a healthy infrastructure.

• Support your colleagues through knowledge sharing, pairing and hands-on training. Actively contribute to hiring and developing talent to strengthen the team.

• Be part of a community of 150+ Data Engineers across the company, continually enhancing the data landscape at Zalando.

• You have over 5 years of experience in large-scale data engineering using open source technologies.

• You demonstrate strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

• You love to learn and you use all opportunities to expand your technical expertise.

• You have a good understanding of modern data engineering practices, including data modeling, data architecture, pipeline as a code, data observability.

• You have solid experience with large-scale batch processing technologies (Airflow, Databricks, Presto/Trino, Spark, AWS data services).

• You are proficient in SQL, including query optimisation and performance tuning.

• You bring experience in designing, implementing, and deploying data processing pipelines in a production environment using Python. Experience in other programming languages like Scala or Java is a plus.
