Overview

AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European computing (UC). To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in automation and operations. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high-availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers.

Responsibilities will encompass overseeing the launch of the ESC in 2025, working closely with global AWS teams, and influencing the evolution of AWS services and technology. A typical day in this role involves collaborating with technology leaders, contributing to the enhancement of day-to-day operations, and ensuring improvements in availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC. You may be required to occasionally participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents occurring out-of-hours. The overarching goal is to deliver scalable services and ensure a high-availability experience for EU customers.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, working closely with global AWS teams, and influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
• Collaborate with technology leaders and contribute to the enhancement of day-to-day operations.
• Ensure improvements in availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
• Occasionally participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents occurring out-of-hours.
• Develop and lead operations and development teams delivering high-availability AWS services for EU customers.
• Engage in the development and testing of scripts to provide practical solutions for workflow improvements.
• Share insights on the European Sovereign Cloud with service teams and foster a culture of mutual understanding.

What you will be doing laterally (people, process, and product alignment)

Beyond the technical aspects, you assume a role as an educator, sharing insights on the complexities of the European Sovereign Cloud with service teams. You will dedicate a substantial portion of your time to carefully review the operational health of services within your team\'s responsibility, identify anomalies, and craft actionable bug reports to enhance overall efficiency and performance. You will offer constructive feedback on change management documents and address your team\'s operational backlog, navigate challenges, and ensure seamless functionality of your systems. You may engage in the development and testing of scripts to improve workflows. This role also emphasizes mentoring, knowledge sharing, and contributing to a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Your position involves 24x7 on-call responsibility as part of a team to root-cause issues and maintain resilience and fault tolerance.

Qualifications

• Basic Qualifications
• This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state.
• Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering working with hardware, software, networking, operating systems.
• Experience scripting processes in a language such as Bash, Python, or Ruby.
• Solid understanding of Linux and networking, and ability to troubleshoot and anticipate problems affecting performance, reliability, or availability of software systems.
• Able to lead the creation, revision, and/or improvement of standard operational procedures (SOPs) and drive operational best practices.

• Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with monitoring frameworks (such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic or similar).
• Experience actively mentoring junior engineers and working cross-organizationally; leading strategic team efforts requiring collaboration across multiple team members.
• Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud systems or services.
• Experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications and performance tuning to optimize fleet utilization.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (such as CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
