Overview

Kiel University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel jointly invite applications for a Professorship (W 3) in Theoretical Oceanography. The professorship is based at GEOMAR and assigned to the Research Unit “Theory and Modelling” within the Department “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics.”

Responsibilities
  • Carry out vigorous, internationally recognized research in the field of ocean and atmosphere dynamics and contribute to the understanding of ocean–atmosphere interactions.
  • Establish a strong research program in geophysical fluid dynamics, addressing processes from 3-D turbulence to the large-scale circulation.
  • Work on representation of ocean mixing in models and the combination of modelling and observations.
  • Engage in theoretical studies that underpin parameterizations and innovative solutions in ocean and climate modelling, as well as data analysis.
  • Foster interdisciplinary cooperation with other departments at GEOMAR and within the Kiel Marine Sciences consortium.
Teaching
  • Teach in the B.Sc. program “Physik des Erdsystems” and the M.Sc. program “Climate Physics” in the field of ocean and climate physics with focus on theoretical oceanography and geophysical fluid dynamics.
  • Corresponding teaching experience is required.
  • Teaching is expected in English, with willingness to teach in German within 3 years.
Position Details

The position is opened with respect to Art. § 61 and § 63 Section 1 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Teaching commitment currently is 4 semester hours per week.
