The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. With its six Faculties covering a broad spectrum of disciplines and its internationally outstanding research profile areas, it enjoys an excellent reputation for its academic achievements and high standards of undergraduate and graduate education. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences comprises six departments with about 200 professors and 10,000 students and is one of the largest faculties in the country.

YOUR TASKS

The successful candidate (f/m/x) should contribute to research, teaching and self-administration in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, in particular at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the Department of Earth Sciences.

In research, the professorship should focus on basic research with a geoscientific focus. Approaches employing both experimental and modelling techniques (computational mineralogy/crystallography) are of advantage. Such approaches could focus on surface mineralogy/crystallography, on phase transformations and their kinetics or on physicochemical mineralogy/crystallography. There should be synergies in research with the department‘s existing key profile area (KPA) “Intelligent Methods for Earth System Sciences”.

In teaching, the successful candidate (f/m/x) should cover the fields of mineralogy and crystallography in the Bachelor and Master of Geosciences degree programs and in the training of doctoral students.

YOUR PROFILE

We are seeking an outstanding candidate (f/m/x) with proven international visibility in the field of mineralogy/crystallography, with a focus on solid earth mineralogy, resource mineralogy, biomineralization or environmental mineralogy. The candidate (f/m/x) should have a strong record in third party funding, be interested in interdisciplinary research, be open to collaboration in coordinated research programs and contribute to excellent teaching. Teaching skills and relevant teaching experience are required and the candidate (f/m/x) should be interested in participating in interdisciplinary teaching events.

OUR OFFER

The Institute of Geology and Mineralogy offers an inspiring interdisciplinary research environment and an excellent laboratory infrastructure, including mineralogical/crystallographic laboratories. Within the framework of the Geoverbund ABC/J, involving three neighbouring research institutions, there are numerous other opportunities for cooperation.

The University of Cologne provides a stimulating academic environment with a wide range of career development opportunities as well as support services for dual career couples and family-friendly working conditions.

The position is available at the earliest possible date. It is initially limited to 5 years. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine semester hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester).

The tenure decision for a permanent W3 professorship will be based on the results of a tenure evaluation to be held in the 5th year after entering into office in accordance with the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures at the University of Cologne (Tenure Track Regulations plus).

The University of Cologne promotes equal opportunities and diversity. Women will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz – LGG NRW). We also expressly welcome applications from all suitable candidates regardless of their gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.

Please submit your application without a photo (in English) including a research and teaching concept as well as a third-party funding record to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences via the University of Cologne‘s academic job portal (https://professorships.uni-koeln.de) by April 10, 2026.
