Offer Description

European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

The Position

For our Detector group, we are looking for a

The main focus of the position is to:

  • maximize the quality of detector data;
  • in particular, by optimizing detector configuration with respect to different experimental techniques employed at European XFEL, and enhancing tools to calibrate and characterize them;
  • contribute to extending and improving the European XFEL's detector calibration infrastructure;
  • actively participate in scientific experiments and user support;
  • liaise with instrument scientists and other stakeholders inside and outside of European XFEL.
Requirements
  • PhD in Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Excellent programming experience within a scientific context.
  • In particular, solid knowledge of Python and its ecosystem (e.g. NumPy, SciPy, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with data from X-ray or particle detectors used for scientific applications, including at least two of: calibration, characterization, data curation/quality control, data reduction, or online/offline reconstruction.
  • Good understanding of data science techniques.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a structured way in a culturally diverse and multidisciplinary team with English as working language.
The following are considered assets:
  • Experience with simulation of detector response to X-rays;
  • Experience with X-ray-based experimental techniques;
  • Experience with git or similar version control systems.
